I've seen a lot of push back in my community against Attorney General Eric Holder for his intent to put our intelligence community on trial. I think his stuttering and nonsensical responses to questioning by Senator Lindsey Graham yesterday prove we are not dealing with a particularly bright and insightful individual. But Eric Holder's intellectual shortcomings aside, I have also heard some people grumble against the intelligence community at large and I'm worried about what that portends.
For instance, will American citizens remain silent in the face of this political prosecution because of some misplaced grudge against our meager intelligence capabilities for 9/11? I've heard people say, "Well, they failed to stop 9/11", or "The CIA propped up Osama and/or Saddam"; thus implying that this is their come-uppence.
I know that the general public is not fully aware of the radically dangerous contraction of our intelligence networks and the impact that has had on our national security. And the public has been inundated with largely trumped up stories of "torture", maiming, and koran "mishandling". A large part of this website will be to put a human face on our intelligence community and to explain the bigger picture to everyday folks who don't want to settle for what an agendized media dishes out. What none of us can afford is an American public that will stand silently by while our first line of defense is held held criminally and civilly liable for the failures of a political class!
So let's take a quick glimpse at that bigger picture...
The failure to stop 9/11 directly hinges on the fact that our intel activities had been outrageously curtailed since 1979 (due to a fatally naive directive from President Carter) and further hamstrung by the FISA wall of the 90's, courtesy of Jamie Gorelick and President Clinton. President Reagan started to rebuild our intel capabilities after Carter only to have Clinton undo the progress. More recently, in response to a very clear and present asymmetrical threat, President Bush hastened to expand our intelligence operations once again (an intensive and arduous process), and now President Obama has shut that down again. Can you begin to grasp the impact such political wrangling has had on our national security?
In 2001, instead of 600 agents working the Middle Eastern desk, we had what...six?! The sluggish and risk-averse bureaucracy of the Clinton years was in full effect, and it cost us dearly.
As for Osama and Saddam, using small-time enemies as assets against a larger foe is a long-time tactic used in every war since the beginning of time. Our government had numerous chances to take them out and Clinton (and Bush 41) refused. Their unwillingness to destroy those tools when they later become a larger problem is a bug, not a feature, of politicians trying to manage war.
And again, those politicians cost us thousands of American lives. When do we get to prosecute them for their culpability?!
Lastly, I've heard plenty of ill-informed talking points trying to make a case that intelligence activities are not Constitutional. Allow me to point out that without the superior intelligence abilities of the American Revolutionaries our nation would not exist! One of our Founding Fathers and our first President was a Spymaster. No one, and I mean no one, would understand better than George Washington that absolute need for intelligence operations.
From Gene Poteat's article about President Washington on this website:
Washington used his intelligence information effectively to know when conditions were favorable to stand and fight, and when it was more prudent to avoid a battle. He was, and remains, our nation's past master of intelligence, counterintelligence, and military deception. His words, written for his spies in 1777, are still valid and required reading at the CIA:
"The necessity of procuring good Intelligence is apparent & need not be further urged. All that remains for me to add is, that you keep the whole matter as secret as possible. For upon Secrecy, Success depends in Most Enterprises of the kind, and for want of it, they are generally defeated, however well planned & promising a favourable issue."
What we are seeing in this day and age is unprecedented. We've never graced our enemies with all the protections and privileges our Constitution provides our citizens. We have never tried illegal combatants in civilian court. And we've never spent more time and resources investigating and prosecuting our own American personnel than our enemies. The way forward is uncharted territory, but it has never been more clear to us here at StandWithIntelligence.com.
There is right, and there is wrong. We intend to stand for what is right, and oppose what it wrong. President Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder are wrong. We intend to prove that again and again - as many times as we have to to make the point. We will oppose them and expose them until they drop the cases against the CIA and Defense personnel currently in their sights. And as an added bonus, we intend to expose the dirty dealings of the unethical attorneys who have chosen to defend jihadis, betray our intelligence operatives, and generally aid and abet our enemies.
For many Americans, the word "treason" no longer has any meaning. But for many of us, it certainly does - and we know treason when we see it.
We will speak out for those whose oaths of service restrain them from speaking out on their own behalf. We will fight against this political assault on them. We have a very simple goal: STOP THE PROSECUTIONS OF THE CIA!
We are private citizens and we Stand With Intelligence.
